The Story Behind the ACEO - Humpback Whale Breach

Normally you see mostly horse drawings from me. Maybe you don't know this already, but I happen to love marine life animals too. Their intelligence and streamlined shapes create animals that bring beauty to this world. The grace with which these animals move is quite awe-inspiring.

Humpback Whale Drawing ACEO Gunilla Wachtel

"Humpback Whale Breach." ACEO. 2.5 x 3.5 inches. Graphite pencil. Gunilla Wachtel. Contact us to make an offer.

This ACEO was created using water soluble graphite pencils, then varnished.

As I'm writing up the blog post, I'm fighting an epic flu that the kids brought home. Plus I have a migraine. I decided to write my ACEO post anyways, but bear with me here, there might be typos.

It's been many years now since I first saw a humpback whale. I did see several on different tours, but the very first time I saw one was not on a tour.

A friend and I were standing on a beautiful sandy beach on Oahu's north shore. The sun was basking down on our faces and the glittery waves were fairly calm. We were just admiring the insanely breathtaking view. Then, out of what seemed like no where, and not very far from shore at all, a mother humpback whale and her baby did a full breach. Wow. That's really all I can say. It has stayed a wow moment all these years.
